  • The term "modern image"

The usage of "Modern Image" is very wide and does not always mean the same thing in model railway circles. The term "Modern Image" came out of an edtorial meeting for the Railway Modeller. The late Cyril Freezer said to me that me could not remember who first said it but it was term they agreed to use when publishing articles on the dynaminic changes that were taking place in the 1960's. Mr Freezer commented that both my diesel depot layouts set in the 1960's, Pig lane and Hanging Hill, were true "Modern Image" layouts. For this forum "Modern Image" covers the changes that took the old steam railway of the 1950s into the early computerised days of the 1970s. It does not mean today or all diesel layouts, therefore there is no room on this forum to argue that it does not mean the modernisation period of our railways.
